Boston is alive with Holiday spirit for people of all ages! My fellow Resident Assistant in Miller Hall, Ki, has one of his floors decorated to the point that "Santa himself would be jealous." I will be honest I have become overly distracted with the holidays and may or may not be neglecting my studies in exchange for some extra Holiday celebration. Thursday for example, Boston will be closing the historic Charles Street between Beacon and Cambridge Streets to have a food festival and all kinds of other fun stuff.
The extra events this week aren't limited to holidays. There is a stress relief session in the Donahue Building today from 1-230 and another one in Miller Hall tomorrow from 630-8. Today many different school administrators, including President Sargent, will be in the C. Walsh Theater to discuss the press on Suffolk as of late. Thursday there will be a Celebration of Senegal Conclusion Ceremony in the C. Walsh Theater. Thursday night is the Winter Ball in the State Street Building for everyone to have a last bit of fun before cramming for finals starts Friday morning. It's going to be a good time.

Winter Fun

As the semester comes to an end and we all start looking forward to vacation more than we look towards preparation for finals, Suffolk and Boston, come anywhere but short with providing many needed distractions. Last night was the Coply Square Tree lighting, tonight is the Boston Common Holiday Tree lighting. If last night is any sign of the turnout that tonight will bring, it's going to be one big party. Suffolk is also running a number of events to celebrate the holidays including the up coming Holiday Concert and some illuminations of our own. I think my finals can wait until the night before, there is just so much fun to be had and I would not want to miss it for the world.

Post Thanksgiving Fun

So as the semester comes to a close we are all getting very busy. I have a few finals and some other school related things to take care of but I am SO excited about winter in Boston. This is my favorite time of year, I love the Christmas festivities with my family and friends. On Thursday the Boston Common "Holiday" Tree Lighting will happen. I will be working it am super excited to see everyone in great moods. I got a job working on the Boston Common Frog Pond Skating rink 3 years ago and have worked every season since and love to see all the people skating around just enjoying this time of the year as much as I do.

Week of 10/12

This holiday weekend gave me a chance to do anything but sit around and enjoy the 3 days off from work. I was recently hired as the Resident Assistant on the 6th Floor of Miller Hall and therefore had to spend my time taking down my old room and moving to the new one. If that was all I had to do I would have been happy. I am a procrastinator which has left me with an entire book to read by next Monday on the constitutional convention, let me stop and contain my excitement....not so much. On top this I have to get ready for Suffolk's annual fall debate tournament to be held on September 24. The topic for the debate "The United States Federal Government should substantially reform domestic transportation infrastructure." Yes that's right super exciting stuff. On a more happy note I will be doing a new set of floor decorations this week with a "Movies Based in Boston" theme.

SGA

So this past weekend I spent 3 days in Freedom New Hampshire. I went up on Friday with members of the Student Government Association, We did some prelim work on procedure and the constitution before the other groups from campus came up on Saturday. While it did rain out the day on Saturday the weekend was not a total loss. I think that all the members of the SGA Eboard did a good job facilitating and leading the group. Now its back to the grind of the normal week. I will leave again on Friday for West Chester Penn. for the first Debate Team trip of the year. It should be a good time.

The Matt Moretti Show 9/26

So for all of you that have managed to find my blog, seeing as I haven't used it since February, I have great news for my first post in months. With wind chills as low as 6 degrees last week the cold seems to be here to stay. The good new, at least no one wants to be outside so they can stay in and study. Yeah like that’s going to happen. The campus has been as busy as always. Last weekend the C Walsh Theater hosted reefer madness and attracted huge crowds for the amazing performance. The Student Government Elections are coming up so of course all the candidates are campaigning in every way possible from free candy to Facebook. Last Friday the Undergraduate Admissions Office hosted a reception for the some of the Accepted Students. The Office of Retention Services held its monthly Suffolk Spirit Night last Tuesday for Men’s basketball. Minus the fact that some majority of the 1.5million people most likely got sick it was an amazing experience. I along with 2 other Suffolk Students were fortunate enough to get tickets to the inauguration. So when the party started early Sunday morning we got on the band wagon and enjoyed the day. Making one of the few smart decisions we did we slept Sunday night into Monday. At 8am Monday morning we left our apartment in what would become an epic journey to the center of one of the biggest parties in the nations history. We walked around DC for the better part of the day and finally go to our security gate at about 1am Tuesday morning with an estimated 30,000 other people. We waited until 6am when they opened the gates and let a crowd of nearly 125,000 people storm the Washington Mall. So by 7am we were standing 5 rows back from the reflecting pool by Congress waiting the 4 hours for the ceremony to start. By the time it did there were about 1,500,000 people standing around, but mostly behind, us waiting and cheering. When the moment came for Obama to come to center stage the sheer volume of the crowd could have tossed you off your feet. The world watched as we watched a part of history that is not soon to be forgot. The ride back to Bethesda MD took hours more, but it was most surely time well spent in my opinion.

Welcome Back

So catching up on a 3 week late start to the semestar hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be. Fortunately, I had planned to miss the first two weeks for a trip to the Washington Center in Washington D.C. for the presidential inauguration. The last week was an attempt at recovering from standing in the cold of DC for more than 20 hours waiting to watch the historic event. As always it was nice to come back to snowy Boston to lay back and call it a week. Now its time to get back to the massive amount of work that comes along with college. This weekend is the first Speech and Debate tournament of the spring semestar held at Suffolk and co-hosted by the University of Florida. I never understood why that tournament is always in Boston and not Florida in the middle of February, but oh well.

The Final Weeks

So let’s talk about the end of the semester. Not only do classes start winding down and prep for the final exams begin but everything in regards to next semester’s schedule start piling up on the list of things to do. This week the undergraduate admissions office will be holding an open house to allow some 1200 students a chance to look over our campus, facilities, staff, and a general life as a Suffolk University student. Then next week will be the real “final” academic week of the semester. I say this because it will be the last full week of classes before the Final exam week starts, and winter break gets under way. So in the long and short, here comes the fun.

A busy week

Well as if my life were not busy enough next week is going to be insane. Tomorrow, Saturday October 25, Suffolk will host our home speech and debate tournament of the fall. Monday night provides a second to last chance for fellow Suffolk University Republicans to get out to the phone bank for John McCain to try getting some last undecided voters in for the election. Tuesday has the Great Debate between the College Democrats and Republicans, who I will represent. The last Program Council Movie night will also be on Tuesday. Wednesday holds 3 different events for the students to choose from. First, the NRA president will be visiting Suffolk University for a discussion on the 2nd amendment. Second, the annual Rainbow alliance drag show. Third, Program councils trip to spooky world. Thursday is the sophomore boat cruise. Friday I will be leaving for Saint Anselm College for a Debate tournament there. I will return late next Saturday for more than desire sleep. All this after a week of absurdly difficult week of Midterms. WOO HOO

This week has been full of business trying to make up for the Columbus Day holiday that took away our Monday, well worth it I might add. On Wednesday we had the double header soccer match first the girls then the boys over in Somerville. Retention services brought free pizza and soda and cosponsored a shuttle bus to the field to have more people come to watch the game. Tomorrow we have the student to student information session which should be fun. Mid terms are coming for almost all of my classes next week so this weekend unfortunately will be mostly dedicated to studies, awesome.

Was it worth it?

The only Vice Presidential Debate of the season aired last night attracting the largest viewer ship of the fall season. Jon Stuart commented that everybody watched not for the good of learning about the candidates but with the hope of “watching Palin implode.” Fortunately for Mrs. Palin she did far better than expected by the American people. That sentiment was resounded around the Suffolk University Campus the next day, at least from what I have heard. Not a whole lot of people are saying that she won but there is a large group on people thinking she could have done worse. I also have to say how impressed I am with the amount of interest coming from a younger community of voters. The 10 West residents piled into the 5th floor conference room by the masses to watch the debate and catch a laugh. I don’t think they were too disappointed by either Palin or Biden’s performance.

Who's gonna win it?

After going to see Blue Man Group last Friday with all I can say is that it was awesome. Somehow Program Council managed to get the entire front 3 rows for students, well done. All fun aside my life returned to monitoring politics as usual. With under 44 days until the election begins many Americans are still unsure about who they think will be our next President. On Sunday 9/22 "60 Minutes" held a double interview and asked both McCain and Obama the same questions in sequence to get a clear cut response on the issues from both Candidates. I would have to say that Obama was a little bit more offensive than Sen. McCain but not the less it was a good way to provide insight to uncertain voters.
This race is becoming so tight that Barak Obama has been campaigning in small towns like Reno Nevada. Reno, the self proclaimed “biggest little city,” is a city of gambling, drugs, and prostitution, and not somewhere you would expect to see a candidate visiting twice. His campaign claims that in such a tight race every vote counts, and getting a few thousand more votes from Reno could allow Barak to take Nevada and be one step closer to the white house. There’s still room to move around, in Ohio alone there are an estimated 900,000 people that still have yet to make a final decision regarding who they are going to vote for in this election
John McCain is traveling through Georgia today with the same intention. It appears now that in the Peach State McCain will finish with over a 20 point lead in the poles. After a less than energetic speech delivered at the Republican National Convention, someone needs to get John McCain some power drinks before the first presidential debate scheduled for Friday.

The week in short

What a week it has been. Due to the fact I like to keep myself busy on top of my Political Science required classes I am a Trustee Ambassador for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (giving tours of our lovely campus and helping out in the office) and a Retention Scholar for the Retention services office.

For all of you that were hoping to have your first weekend here be all nice weather before it gets cold and miserable, sorry that you had to deal with that absolutely wonderful reminisce of a tropical storm that graced the city of Boston with its presents on Saturday night. Just think about it this way, if it were snow it would have been in the ball park of 24 inches!

Look forward to a week of sunny days (except for a few)

TJ
